BIOGRAPHY:
(Official Myspace)
From the heart of the Midwest rises a beast whose ferocity and aggression is rivaled only by its poise and focus. For two years For Today have clawed and scraped their way into the spotlight. Seldom is there to be found a band whose passion and integrity are matched by their technicality and musical merit. As forthcoming about their faith as they are about their musical prowess, Vocalist Mattie Montgomery sums up the band's mission: This has nothing to do with music and everything to do with our faith in Christ." But music is a catalyst and For Today uses their August Burns Red-meets-Between The Buried And Me sound to spread their message across the nation. For Today have become widely known as one of modern metal's most technically proficient bands and have earned their spot by playing over 200 dates in 2007 alone.Fusing extensive and prestigious backgrounds in both hardcore and metal and promising to 'up' the touring ante in 2008 they have stamped their name in the hearts of fans from all across the globe. For Today's debut full-length "Ekklesia," produced by Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, The Human Abstract) is marked for release on April 1 and with the backing of Facedown Records (along with a relentless tour schedule) For Today stands poised and ready to stake their claim in today's modern metal scene.

REVIEW:
(February 23rd, 2009) For Today’s sophomore album on Facedown Records, "Portraits" centers around "the fathers of the faith." Vocalist Mattie Montgomery had this to say about the new album: "We’ve been locked up for over two months now, pouring ourselves into our new album, Portraits. We are excited and proud to say that finally it’s finished! All of our new material is technically, creatively, and spiritually far above anything we’ve put out in the past. You can expect Portraits to be heavier, catchier, and more technical than our previous album Ekklesia and for it to stand with more authority and conviction than ever before." The band will enter the studio on March 2nd to begin tracking the new material with producer Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, Once Nothing, Advent). The album will feature special Guest Vocal spots from Impending Doom and Advent. To watch a Live Clip of the band playing the new song "Joel (The Watchman)" Click here!

REVIEW:
As previously stated, For Today is pretty popular in the Christian community, but don’t let that scare you off if it isn’t your thing — whether you bow to Budha or Mark-Paul Gosselaar, there’s something here for everyone. A great follow up album since their release of Ekklesia (2008)Portraits is everything that I could hope for from a new release. Vocals, Guitar, Drums, and Bass — they’re all a bit more polished this go-round, and all-in-all it’s pretty tight..And What About "Ekklesia"

Sound: The sound of this album is very unique. It engages brutal breakdowns yet still maintains a very melodic sound to it. Very creative guitar work and just simply amazing drumming. The direction in which For Today has chosen to write their debut is a narrow road, but I think they pulled it off quite well. Mattie's vocals sound in the album are very well complimented with a clean vocal throughout the album. Not necessarily in every song, but still very evident. The breakdowns in this record are absolutely incredible. Progressive breakdowns would be the best word to describe it. Very, very talented group of young men and they know how to use it. //9

Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are very pro-christian in this album. Optimistic and thoughtful. They start off with "Infantry" which places someone asking to "Make us soldiers of men. Bringing strength to the weak". Although the lyrics are very vague or too deep. It calls people into seeing the good in others and God. The positive messages are often sung during very hard breakdowns and it is an odd combo but you just can't help the breaking ability of For Today. The singing of the album is very odd. It's not exactly singing, it's more of a complimentary Voice rather than Frontman Vocals. There are plenty of Gang Vocals to go around and it sounds a lot like "Rage Against The Machine" at times. The screaming in not very diverse. Mattie variates between very high throaty Vocals to pretty good lows. // 7

Impression: Overall, "Ekklesia" is a very progressive album in its sound but not it's lyrics. It has enough to tie someone over. Everything could be better but this album is definitely a great start to future great band. I'm really excited to see them live and listen to any future releases. The most impressive song musically is, in my opinion, "Agape". The sweeps in the breakdown make that song near immortal. If this album were stolen or lost, I'm pretty sure I would buy it again. It is definitely a must have for any metal fans out there. Don't past this band up. They have plenty of depth to keep you listening(http://www.holymetalrob.com/)
